My Work, My Jacket.

Tell us a bit about you and your background?

Ever since I was a child, I have always been drawing a lot. I never really liked school and the only subject that cheered me up at school was drawing. At 18, after high school, I went to Saint Martins in London to discover the freedom to express myself through different mediums in art. This allowed me to touch several mediums and to understand very quickly that I did not want to confine myself to a single form of creation. Through my travels, watercolor has always been my favorite painting medium. I always carried a palette of watercolors in my luggage to sketch the objects that I hunted in the flea markets.

And then, as I turned 20, I came to Paris. Which was a real revelation. A love at first sight that continues to inspire me even today in my creations. I like to pay tribute to this city which welcomed me and which still inspires me every day. Today, it is a joy and a great freedom to be able to bring my watercolors to life on the objects that I imagine. As well as in my books published by Flammarion.

My watercolors truly come to life once they come across different mediums. Silk, glassware, porcelain, papier mâché, all these materials are such rich means of expression, like canvas. My childhood dream came true when I opened my very first boutique two years ago on 48 rue Madame to share my vision of the world around me!

« Wearing this Mont Saint Michel jacket is like wearing the work jacket of French craftsmen. It acquires a patina over time, like old objects. It is the uniform of French know-how. »

Tell us about your link with the past, old elements and vintage?

Indeed, I fell into the pot of antiques and art from an early age :-) With antique dealers as parents and a painter grandmother, I was bathed in the world of the old and paints. From an early age, I was brought and shown around flea markets, auction rooms and museums in a stroller... I think that all these objects of yesterday shaped my vision of creation.

Why does Paris inspires you so much?
What inspires you the most?

Paris is an endless source of inspiration! I arrived in this city at the age of 20 and it immediately inspired me. I like to pay tribute to it in my creations and to be able to share and transmit the magic I felt of this city with travelers and Parisians. Souvenirs of Paris made with love and delicacy for people who love this city as much as I do.

Old objects also inspire me a lot in the artworks I create every day. That's why I like to hunt every weekend in the flea markets to draw inspiration from yesterday's objects. Traveling is also a great source of inspiration! My collection of scented candles is dedicated to my travels and the places I want to remember. Orange blossom with Bonjour Sicily or tomato leaf with Bonjour Normandie, which reminds me of my vegetable garden in Normandy.

« Paris is an endless source of inspiration… I like to pay tribute to it in my creations… »

Tell us a bit about your Parisian boutique: what can we find there?

I opened my shop on 48 rue Madame, near the Luxembourg Gardens, to make adults dream by plunging them back into their inner child's soul. I wanted to share with Parisians and travelers the Paris of yesterday, the one that no longer exists, the one where we took the time to dream. I wanted a place that pays tribute to know-how and craftsmanship.

Here in my shop you can find all the objects that are missing from my daily life, illustrated with my watercolors: the collection of enamelled porcelain tableware, mouth-blown glassware, handmade decorative objects such as secret books inspired by the 18th century, or wonderful display cases, silk scarves, or even antiques that I hunt during my travels.
48 rue Madame is like a big playground to share the stories I want to tell with the people who follow me !

A future project that excites you the most?

Many of my new works will be made on china with new designs coming as well. A brand new collection of glassware illustrated by me is also on its way! Two new candle fragrances will soon be available in order to travel to two new destinations. A new pop-up store in a Parisian department store will open at the end of the summer... And then, my new book "Le Paris Merveilleux de Marin Montagut" will soon be translated into Korean and Japanese!
