One of the most beautiful cities by the sea from Brittany – Cancale — is only a one hour drive away from our Design studio. We are lucky to have one of the most beautiful cities by the sea from Brittany : Cancale. It is located on the Emerald coast between the Mont Saint Michel and Saint-Malo and managed to keep its village vibe (it only has 5000 inhabitants). There’s a calming and inspiring atmosphere there. Breathe in and take in some invigorating sea air.
But what would Cancale be without its famous oysters? You want to get some flat ones, or “pied-de-cheval” if you’re a pro. You’ll be able to look at the aligned oyster reefs at low tide from the Houle Harbor. The oysters go from the farm directly to the plate: they are directly sold everyday all-year-long by the farmers in the oyster market. Give in to temptation and get a dozen oysters (don’t forget the white wine to go along with it) and sit on the harbor’s staircase to enjoy them. As tradition has it, throw your empty shells back into the sea: it should bring you luck!
Then walk along the coast towards the Pointe du Hock to take a swim in one of the most Instagram-worthy sea water swimming pools located on the Abri des Flots’ beach. There you’ll find few tourists, only some well-informed people, sand benches, rocks, and a breathtaking view. You shouldn’t share this address to anyone!
Cancale also has one of the best gourmet restaurants founded by the Roellinger family which is proud of its Breton roots and advocates for a local cuisine with local ingredients from the land and the sea. Whether you like seashell gourmet food , original spice blends with the “Roellinger Spices”, or local pastries with “Grain de Vanille”, the Roellinger family will please your tastebuds! But they are also great hosts with the Château Richeux and its rooms with a lovely view over the bay or the small hotel Les Rimains or the kleds (wind shelter in the local language) at the Ferme du Vent.
Here are a lot of good reasons to recharge your batteries and get a big chunk of sea air in this lovely village by the sea that we love dearly here at the Mont St Michel.
